According to corporate data provider Tianyancha, Shenzhen PhotonOpt Semiconductor Co., Ltd., a developer of AR optical components, has completed its Series C round of financing. Its registered capital has risen from RMB 3.5373 million to RMB 3.9618 million.
New investors joining this round include Wuxi Zhongshe Venture Capital Management (L.P.), Zhongqing Henghui (Lanxi) Venture Capital Partnership (L.P.), and Shenzhen Pingshan Xingping No.1 Industrial Park Private Equity Venture Capital Fund (L.P.), among other institutional backers.
Founded in January 2020 and headquartered in Pingshan District, Shenzhen, PhotonOpt Semiconductor specializes in diffractive waveguide optical chips, optical engine micro-projection modules, integrated optical assemblies, alongside micro-nano semiconductor materials and manufacturing processes. The firm prioritizes R&D and mass production of diffractive waveguide display modules, adopting a technical path benchmarked against flagship AR hardware from Microsoft HoloLens and Magic Leap.

The startup was co-founded by AR optics specialist Zhu Yisheng, Cambridge University professor and leading diffractive waveguide expert Chu Daping, and a cohort of industry scientists. Zhu previously worked at Huawei overseeing AR optical development, while Professor Chu boasts decades of research experience in optoelectronics and diffractive waveguide technology.
Its product portfolio falls into two core lines: optical waveguides and optical engines. A standout proprietary design is its single-engine dual-eye solution, which feeds visual content from one compact optical engine into an integrated waveguide before splitting imagery for left and right eye viewing. Built around one optical engine paired with a unified dual-channel waveguide, the architecture cuts overall material costs yet comes with inherent constraints in 3D rendering performance and industrial design flexibility.
For industrial rollout, PhotonOpt broke ground on a diffractive waveguide module R&D and manufacturing base in Shanbei Subdistrict, Liangxi District, Wuxi back in September 2025. The facility carries total planned investment exceeding RMB 300 million with a designed full-capacity output of one million waveguide sets annually. In May 2026, its subsidiary Pengyue Technology (Liuzhou) kicked off construction on a project for 12-inch semiconductor-grade glass wafers and diffractive waveguide modules.
Per Qichacha corporate filings, PhotonOpt has secured seven successive financing rounds to date. Its investor roster spans industrial and financial backers including Jinghua Optoelectronics, CAS Star Venture Capital, Sequoia China Seed Fund, Qianhai Equity Investment Fund, Shenzhen Hi-Tech Investment Group, ByteDance and Sanqi Interactive Entertainment.
